What's on in museums

All of our museums offer a varied programme of events, exhibitions and activities throughout their open season.

We often have talks or events along the theme of our current exhibition, for example, art appreciation talks, tapestry workshops, talks about the collection or local history. More information can be found on our social media channels.

Museum Guides and Tours

All visitors to the John Gray Centre can take advantage of our Museum Audio Guides. The main exhibition has been largely audio-described, with vivid descriptions of the objects on display and fascinating background information about them. The guides were developed to bring the exhibitions to life for visually impaired people and include optional navigational guidelines for getting around the exhibition. They are suitable for all visitors.

A selection of self-guided walking tours of Dunbar and the surrounding area are available at both Dunbar Town House and John Muir's Birthplace. Information about John Muir's Birthplace is available in a number of different languages and can be picked up at the front desk. For information about group visits please see individual museum pages. Tours of the historic Dunbar Town House are available on request during the summer season and on Saturdays during the winter.

Visitors to Prestongrange Museum can enjoy a guided tour during the months of April to September and can still tour the site using a mobile phone during the closed months by calling the numbers on the signposts around the site.

Community Curators

Have you ever thought about putting on an exhibition? We have been working with lots of different groups who have successfully put on displays in our galleries, smaller display areas or museum cases. If this sounds like something you might be interested in please get in touch. We look forward to hearing your ideas!

Regular Events and Activities for Kids

Are you a parent or carer? We have plenty of regular events and activities that might interest you and many of them are free! We offer drop in themed craft sessions in holiday periods, at weekends and on Friday afternoons and promote these on our social media accounts. We also have regular scavenger hunts and storytelling on top of the numerous activities such as themed games and colouring in offered throughout our exhibitions. These activities are generally suitable for primary school-aged children and their accompanying adults.

Wee Wednesdays at Prestongrange Museum

For our youngest visitors we have our popular 'Wee Wednesdays' sessions at Prestongrange Museum which run on a Wednesday morning, 10am to 11am. Look out for details of when these are on via our Facebook page or get in touch for details. These sessions welcome preschool children for songs, stories and crafts in the relaxing atmosphere of the Visitor Centre where tea, coffee, juice and snacks are available. The cost is £1 per craft.
