Developer Hargreaves is to carry out a number of road safety improvements on a busy roundabout near Tranent.
Under the new layout, one of the proposed improvements involves a section of the carriageway on the Bankton Junction South Roundabout of the A1 being turned into a verge and footway to alleviate traffic pressure.
The work will be funded and undertaken by Hargreaves and is required to satisfy their planning conditions for the nearby Blindwells development.
The changes will see a section of carriageway on the South Roundabout between the central island and the A198 north arm converted to a grass verge and footway. Traffic signals will manage the flow of vehicles and provide a safe crossing point for those on foot.
Vehicles coming from Church Street, Tranent, to Tranent Mains Road will travel via the Bankton Junction North Roundabout, reducing traffic flow at the South Roundabout. Pedestrians travelling from Church Street to Tranent Mains Road will not be affected by the change.
To facilitate the new layout, elected members at a full council meeting on Tuesday (26 August) gave officers approval to prepare the redetermination order for the carriageway. This legal process will include a public consultation on the order and the council will provide further updates as this is progressed.
Further improvements are planned to the North Roundabout to address pressures on the junction at the opposite side of the A1. Hargreaves is leading on the design in collaboration with Transport Scotland and East Lothian Council.
