Council Tax bands

Our Council Tax team is extremely busy at the moment and although we understand that delays in processing customer enquiries can be frustrating, we are asking that customers please bear with us during this busy time.

If you have contacted the team and are awaiting a reply, please be patient, we will be in touch as soon as we can.  If possible, please avoid contacting the team to ask for a progress update as this generates additional work and may delay your enquiry.

Each dwelling has been put into one of eight Council Tax bands according to its open market value at the 1 April 1991.

Your property band was set by the Assessor for Lothian Valuation Joint Board. All appeals or objections about banding should be directed to the Assessor.

Call 0131 344 2500, email enquiries@lothian-vjb.gov.uk or visit www.lothian-vjb.gov.uk.

New taxpayers should note that any objection must be made to the Assessor within six months of becoming a Council Tax payer.

You are still required to pay Council Tax, as billed, while your objection or appeal is being considered.

Be aware of scams

We want to make customers aware that they can contact the Assessor direct if they wish to appeal their Council Tax band and this is free of charge. If anyone phones to say they can do this on your behalf, for a fee, then this is a scam.

If in doubt, please contact the Assessor or East Lothian Council Tax team for advice.
