Musselburgh Lagoons Path

Levenhall Links was created as a separation and storage site for the ash from Cockenzie Power Station, as this was land reclaimed from the sea it quickly became a popular roosting site for wading birds. This land was gradually handed over to East Lothian Council and with additional landscaping completed became an important greenspace for the residents of Musselburgh and the surrounding area.

East Lothian Council’s Countryside Ranger for the site had noticed that when groups of cyclists had cycled past the bird sanctuary, the birds were disturbed and had flown away. Therefore, a designated route past the bird sanctury was seleted for upgrading to a three metre-wide tarmac surface to guide visitors away from the most sensitve sites.

The newly completed route gives direct East-West link across Levenhall Links with great views and shelter from off-shore winds, and provides another link for the local cycle network in the area. The new path is also quicker and quieter, and has enabled active travel journeys to be made by the local community which no longer cause any disturbance to the birds in the area.
