The Adult Placement Service helps approved adult placement carers to share their home and time with someone in need.

Carers are ordinary people from the local community who offer support and short or long-term care within their home to those who need help due to age, illness or disability.

Information for placements

Adult placements are available to East Lothian residents over the age of 16, following a needs assessment carried out by one of our social workers. More information on assessments is available from our needs assessment section.

What care is provided?

Carers can provide very flexible care, including:

  • respite or short breaks, which allow both you and your carer to have a break.
  • long-term care, which means that you will move into a carers home on a permanent basis to receive the support you need on an ongoing basis.

You may have to contribute towards the costs of your stay, for example an amount to cover the cost of your food. You would be told in advance if this is the case and how much you would be expected to pay.

Information on becoming an Adult Placement Carer

Adult placement carers provide a vital service in the county. They are self-employed but are managed by the Council, in a paid role that is diverse and rewarding.

We welcome people from a wide variety of backgrounds and experience. Qualifications are not essential; we're far more interested in your personal qualities, such as:

  • tolerance.
  • sense of humour.
  • flexibility.
  • the ability to be a good listener.

What we consider

We will consider the physical space and standards of your home, to ensure that it will be suitable for a placement. We will also carry out a detailed personal assessment with you and your family, and ask for medical and personal references, as well as a criminal record and full Disclosure check.

If you're accepted, we will provide training and support you and your family in the role.
