Council tax

Set up a direct debit

Direct Debit logo

You can set up your direct debit by clicking here

Alternatively, you can download a direct debit instruction and return the completed form to our council tax team.

The simplest and most convenient way to pay your council tax is by direct debit. Your payments can be spread over 10 or 12 months within the current financial year. You can choose to set up your instalments to pay on the 5th, 16th or last day of each month.

Once the direct debit has been set up, you will receive a bill that will list the instalment amounts, and the date they will be requested, unless that day falls on a weekend or Bank holiday in which case it will requested on the next working day.

If for any reason, your council tax liability changes, we must give you 14 days notice of any amended instalments.

If you are in arrears with your council tax payments, we may be unable to set up a direct debit for you. If you wish to discuss this further, please contact us.

Important information about Universal Credit

From 23rd March 2016, Universal Credit has been extended in East Lothian to include ALL new claimants of working age.

If you are of working age and were intending to make a new claim for housing benefit, you may now be required to claim help towards your housing costs as part of your Universal Credit claim.

You will NOT be able to claim for help with your council tax as part of your Universal Credit claim.  You MUST make a separate claim to East Lothian Council for this.

You can make a claim for council tax reduction online.
