Local businesses achieve EatSafe award standards
The Catering Team at Knox Academy, A.S Gardner & Son, Butcher, Tranent and Hilton Lodge Nursing Home, Haddington are the first food and catering businesses to be awarded an EatSafe Award in East Lothian. EatSafe is designed to promote excellence in Food Hygiene and Food Safety Management in catering/food establishments across Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The scheme is administered by local authority Environmental Health Services (EHS) in conjunction with Food Standards Scotland, and eligible establishments are assessed for the Award as part of scheduled Food Hygiene inspections carried out by the Environmental Health team.
Derek Oliver, Service Manager, Environmental Health, said:
"The EatSafe Award Scheme was developed in Northern Ireland following consultation with a range of interested parties including consumers, caterers and enforcers and was extended to Scotland in 2005 Food Standards Scotland considers the EatSafe Award Scheme to be an important element in raising food safety standards thus supporting food law enforcement.
"Premises don’t apply for the award but rather Environmental Health Officers and Food and Safety Officers assess if a business is eligible while carrying out routine inspections. If the business meets the standards required they will be advised by the officer. The EatSafe Awards are seen as a reward for those businesses that have achieved standards over and above the present legal requirements and award winning businesses are issued with a certificate and promotional material to display in their premises."
