Healthy eating

We are actively working with our partners in the NHS and the voluntary sector to ensure that everyone in the community can make food choices that lead to a safe, balanced and nutritious diet.

What is a healthy diet?

The central message we wish to promote in relation to food and health is balance. The Eating for Health model below shows the major food groups and the proportions of each food group required for a balanced diet.

In general, people in Scotland need to eat more:

  • fruit and vegetables
  • bread and cereals
  • oily fish

We also need to balance this by eating less food that is high in fat, sugar and salt.
