How is an EMA calculated and paid?

If you are 16 or older between 1 March and 30 September you may be eligible for an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) from the start of the August Term. If you turn 16 between 1 October and 28 February you may be eligible for an EMA from the start of the January Term.

The income thresholds are as follows:

*Dependent children are all those up to the age of 16 and those over the age of 16 and up to the age of 25 if they are in full time further education or higher education.

How is an EMA paid?

EMAs are paid directly into the student's bank account; no other account will be accepted.

The account must accept BACS payments, please check with your bank if you are unsure about this.

When is an EMA paid?

Payment will normally be made fortnightly, two weeks in arrears. A timetable will be issued to the student on receipt of a signed learning agreement.
