Our school meals service supplies meals for 36 Primary and 6 High schools providing approximately 750,000 primary and 430,000 secondary school pupils with lunch each year, that's over 6,200 per school day! The health and well being of children and young people are at the heart of everything we do. We are totally dedicated to providing appetising and nutritious meals for pupils during their time spent at school.
Primary School Meals
In conjunction with the Scottish Government's Language Learning in Scotland: A 1+2 Approach we have worked with our colleagues in Education so that the new menu includes the French translation of all our dishes.
High School Meals
In all six of East Lothian Council's High Schools there is a morning break service every day where pupils can choose from a selection of hot and cold snacks and a range of hot and cold drinks.
The daily lunch time service offers a 3 week menu cycle serving traditional 2 course meals, either soup and a main meal or a main meal and dessert. There is also a daily vegetarian choice and a range of 'Tastes of the World' dishes - Indian, Chinese, Mexican and Mediterranean, a selection of salads, sandwiches, baguettes, 'home-baking' and hot and cold drinks.

This system allows parents or guardians to deposit funds on their child's card through an internet payment, or allows the pupil to top up their card using a cash machine in the school. One of the most important aims of cashless catering is to minimise the stigma attached to children and young people who are eligible for free school meals. Although cashless catering is not yet available in primary schools, we work closely with head teachers in developing systems which protect the anonymity of children who choose to have free meals in their school.
When using the internet for deposits to the Cashless Catering system the cut off time is 8.00am. Therefore, provided the transaction takes place before 8.00am, the funds will be available later that morning. Payments made after 8.00am on a Friday and before 8.00am on a Monday will be credited by 9.00am on Monday.
