Gully maintenance and spillages

Gullies

East Lothian Council, Road Services is responsible for the maintenance of  over 16,800 roadside gullies. With so many gullies you will appreciate we can't service them all at the same time and that is why we have a programme of cyclic maintenance.

Within the winter period when we respond to a call out for a blocked drain on the road, we find that the grate is typically covered by wet leaves or grass, which act like a plug and stops the water flowing freely. If the public notice that a gully on their street has become blocked by leaves which can be easily brushed away, without putting yourself or others at risk, we would ask the public to brush the blockage to one side. Gather up the leaves and dispose of them if they can.

During flood conditions, we provide a reactive service to clear overflowing ditches, gullies and drains on roads and pavements.

Spillages

Roads Services is also responsible for keeping roads and pavements clear of spillages from substances such as oil or diesel.

If a spillage is hazardous, Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service may also become involved and road closures may be necessary.
