Council's waste services team scoop top award

East Lothian Council enjoyed a double success of achievements at awards ceremonies this week.

The first award came at the Scottish Resources Conference which is the country’ s biggest and most important event for sustainability, resource and waste management professionals and is run in partnership by CIWM and Zero Waste Scotland.

The Waste Services team won the Best Health & Safety Initiative in Resource and Waste category. East Lothian Council’s Waste Services team has designed its own health and safety training programme, which has reduced accidents by 66% and improved attendance. These improvements have generated savings on absence costs, damage repair costs and claims.  The award also related to the work done by Waste Services in supporting workforce development and Zero Waste Scotland and the Scottish Government SWITCH Forum to create a benchmarked standard for competence and skills in health and safety practice within the Waste Industry.

Members of the pioneering Beach Wheelchair Project in North Berwick won the Communities and Partnerships category at the COSLA Excellence Awards. The project lends child and adult beach wheelchairs that help people with disabilities to access the town’s beaches and has been supported by a wide range of partners in the local community including East Lothian Council, Macdonald Marine Hotel, Support from the Start, North Berwick Coastal Area Partnership, The Big Lottery, HSBC, Forth Boat Tours and North Berwick Community Centre.

East Lothian Council, Chief Executive, Angela Leitch, said:

“These two awards recognise examples of innovative work carried out by council staff both internally and in partnership with wider communities. I would like to add my own congratulations to all those involved in turning initial ideas into successful projects that have a positive impact on our staff and residents alike.”
