How Self-Directed Support Supports Children and Young People

How Self-Directed Support Supports Children and Young People by promoting:

  • Early help and family support, ensuring needs are addressed as soon as possible.
  • Strengths‑based assessment, focusing on abilities, interests and goals rather than challenges.
  • Involvement in decisions, with as much input from children and young people as is possible for their age and understanding.
  • Better life outcomes, such as improved wellbeing, independence, participation and connection with their community.
  • Self-Directed Support recognises the important role of parents, family members and carers — including young carers. The 2013 Act and the Carers (Scotland) Act 2016 together create pathways to support and ensure families are well‑informed and included in decision‑making.
