When to pay rent

Your council rent is charged fortnightly and is payable in advance by the first Monday of each rent period. Any payment not made on time will be treated as arrears.

Paying rent is the most important part of your tenancy agreement. It is important that you pay your rent on time and in full and that you are aware of the consequences if you do not pay.

We issue letters to all council tenants in March each year to tell you how much rent you will have to pay in the forthcoming financial year.

Although rent is charged fortnightly, we offer flexible payment options to suit your circumstances. If you would like to discuss how best to pay your rent to avoid falling into arrears, just contact the Rent Income team and we will be happy to help.

Rent charge breaks 2022/23

If you have an up-to-date rent account, you can enjoy a rent payment break:

  • fortnight beginning 27 June 2022
  • fortnight beginning 26 December 2022

It is important to note, if you have rent arrears, you will not qualify for these payment breaks and you must continue to pay towards your rent arrears during these periods.
