List of public roads

As the Roads Authority, we have a statutory responsibility to publish the list of public roads that are adopted and maintained by East Lothian Council.

Streets in the list of public roads have either designated names i.e. ‘High Street’ or are described using their number and where they start ‘from’ and go ‘to'. For example, A199 Wallyford Roundabout to Strawberry Corner Roundabout. The numbered roads (A class, B class, C class, and Unclassified roads) are also included in the download document.

List of public roads

The main trunk roads are not included here, as they are operated and managed by Transport Scotland as the national roads authority. In East Lothian, these roads include parts of the A1 and the A720 City Bypass, and a short section of A68.

Each local street has a status of either privateprospectively public or public road. Once a road has planning permission it can be recorded as prospectively public and when we are satisfied that the road has been built to our standards, the developer can apply for its adoption. Once a road is adopted it is added to the List of Public Roads and becomes public.

The List of public roads is regularly updated and is monitored by the streetgazetteer@eastlothian.gov.uk.

The adoption status of a road can be checked on the Find a Public Street website. This is a trial facility not for commercial use, and is provided by the Improvement Service to support local roads authorities in meeting their Roads Scotland Act 1984 requirements to publish up to date public road information.
