East Lothian on Foot
East Lothian is the birthplace of John Muir and home to over 200 miles of paths, including a section of the John Muir Way. This makes the county a great place to eascape traffic and get around on foot.
Plan your route
It takes most people 15 to 20 minutes to walk one mile, which will burn around 100 calories. This is why walking for short, everyday journeys is an excellent way to keep up your fitness and explore the local area.
We recommend using our walking app partner Go Jauntly. You can download their free mobile app to find walks created by local people, as well as planning your own route or joining one of their regular walking challenges.
For the full range of walking routes around East Lothian, visit our Core Paths page. Let's Get Active in East Lothian also has a number of maps showing walking and cycling routes around our towns.
Google Maps can also be used to plan your journey on foot.
Walking groups
There are hundreds of free volunteer-led health walks taking place around Scotland each week. These groups are a great way to meet new people and explore the local area. Find your nearest walk through Paths 4 All.
East Lothian Council's Ageing Well programme also offers a range of health and wellbring walks, which encourage people to build up their fitness in the company of others. This currently includes volunteer-led walks around areas such as Dunbar, Haddington, Musselburgh, North Berwick and Prestonpans.
MeetUp also lists local walking groups, while East Lothian Ramblers run weekend walks throughout the year.
Volunteering
East Lothian Countryside Services are always keen to take on new volunteers, with opportunities to get involved in a variety of projects around the county. They also run a Junior Ranger service for young people aged 11-18. Complete and return and application form to get started.
